ICT CENTENARY AWARD 2014 HELD AT YAR’ADUA CENTER, ABUJA | IANA STEWARDSHIP TRANSITION DEBATE

Yours truly was decorated with the award of the .NG Advocacy for the Federation at the recent held ICT Centenary Award 2014 ceremony. This event, organized by the ICT Media Initiatives, was used to mark Nigeria’s centenary celebration which begun early this year for the Information Communication Technology (ICT) Sector. Nigerians, including President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, who had contributed in the ICT industry, were rewarded with garlands of honour, at the first ever ICT Centenary conference and award held at Musa Yar’adua Center Abuja.

The event drew participation from top industry administrators, operators, regulators and Enthusiasts.
The President, represented by the Minister of Communication Technology, Dr. (Mrs.) Omobola Johnson, spoke of the decisive steps he had taken so far to transform the country through the Ministry of Communication Technology to digitalize the economy.

He said that the Federal Government of Nigeria had raised awareness about ICT as a critical national infrastructure in the same mode with power, roads and railways and is committed to the transformation of Nigeria into a digitalized economy.
President Jonathan explained that he is aware of the key role Broadband plays in facilitating the economic and social development of any nation and facilitated the creation of a Broadband Strategy and Roadmap Plan for Nigeria and charged the Ministry of Communication Technology to commence the implementation of the Plan.

The President also described the Nigerian ICT sector as a crucial sector that has added value to the Nigerian economy in a myriad of ways.

President Jonathan was conferred with the 'Grand Commander of ICT Promoters in Nigeria,' for being Nigeria's first digital President. Also honoured at the event was Dr. (Mrs.) Omobola Johnson, Minister of Communication Technology, Dr. Eugene Juwah, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). My humble self, Mrs. Mary Uduma, President, Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) was also recognized with the award as the .NG Advocacy for the Federation.

Other awardees include the Group Managing Director of Omatek Ventures Plc, Mrs Florence Seriki; Managing Director of MainOne Limited, Ms. Funke Opeke and the immediate past Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs Ibukun Odusote, the immediate past President of the Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria, ISPON, Dr. Chris Uwaje, who was conferred with the indigenous and IT Policy advocate award.

On the night of the glitz, colour, music and cultural dances spiced with integrated Africanness, the Chairman of Open Media and former EVC of NCC, Dr. Ernest Ndukwe was also decorated with the pathfinder award for setting the pace for the revolution in Nigeria ICT ecosystem.

I wish to, on behalf of NiRA Board of Trustees, Executive Board of Directors and staff extend our gratitude to the organizers of the ICT CENTENARY AWARD 2014, especially for recognition of the .NG domain name business.

Furthermore, IANA Stewardship Transition debate is still on. I wish to enjoy NIRA stakeholders to get involved and let your voices be heard on the global topic Internet Governance issue. The bottom up multi-stakeholder approach created by ICANN following the announcement of the US Government through the NTIA, to hands off the oversight of the IANA Functions Operator, is a very good platform for Internet Communities to prepare and present a proposal on Transition of IANA Stewardship function from NTIA to the International Internet Community.
