Apprentice stabbed to death over missing memory card

IF the trio of Akinsola Jelilat (21), Oladipupo Sukurat (19) and Mukaila Kehinde (19) had known that the outcome of the fight they were involved in recently would lead to a stint in the police cell, probably they would have made extra efforts to avoid it.

But the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department of Oyo State Police Command is currently looking into the death of one Rilwan Akinropo (25) who was reportedly stabbed during the fight, and who later died as a result of the injury sustained from the stabbing.

Crime Reports learnt that the deceased, who was an apprentice in a barbing salon beside Jelilat’s shop, had had an issue with the ladies since October. Jelilat was said to have taken her phone to the barber’s shop to charge but to her shock, the memory card in the phone was stolen.

This caused disaffection between her and her apprentices on one side and Rilwan and others on the other side. Their relationship became strained thereafter.

On Tuesday, November 11, at about 4p.m. the deceased’s younger brother whose name is yet to be ascertained reportedly went to Jelilat’s shop to confront her over an unknown issue. While they were at it, one of the apprentices, Kehinde, came from where she went to buy food. An attempt to know what was happening between her boss and the young man earned a slap from the latter.

The deceased was also reported to have emerged from the shop where he was and attacked another apprentice, Sukurat, where she was cutting a material. He allegedly took the scissors she was using and used it to stab her in the neck after pushing her into a gutter. He was said to have dropped the scissors and gone for Jelilat whom he also dealt with.

Though none of the girls admitted knowing how Rilwan got his fatal wound, he was said to have been stabbed in the stomach and hand with the same scissors. His injury however turned fatal as he died on November 15 at about 3 a.m.

Narrating how it all started, Akinsola Jelilat (21), a fashion designer, said: “I was in shop when the younger brother of the deceased came to me and asked whether I knew him. I replied that I didn’t and would not want to know him. At that point, one of my apprentices, Kehinde, came from where she went to buy food and enquired on what was happening.

“Before we knew it, the brother slapped her. A fight ensued and as I was trying to separate them, the deceased came and started fighting with another apprentice called Sukurat. I went to separate them but Rilwan dragged me with the hijab I wore.

“I was taken from his grip and put in a shop. It was from there I heard that Sukurat had been stabbed with scissors. I didn’t know when Rilwan was stabbed. Kehinde only came to tell me that we should go to Kobolese police post nearby to report what happened.”

One of the apprentices, Kehinde Mukaila (19), also denied knowledge of how Rilwan sustained injuries.

Sukurat also claimed that she did not stab the deceased and that on the contrary, he was the one who stabbed her on the neck, the wound of which is yet to heal completely.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor, confirmed the story, saying that investigations were still ongoing.
